Immobile, Slowly Moving, Moving Forward: Youth in Transition

Jean Sunde PETERSON

Abstract

Abstract

The author uses clinical examples to epitomize developmental “stuckness” during adolescence, noting struggles of pupils along a continuum of ability level, circumstance, and socioeconomic status, including gifted individuals. By regularly using a developmental template, counselors may ascertain which tasks are contributing to presenting issues. Just as with individual counseling, counselors who convey nonjudgmental, respectful attention, and a one-down posture in development-oriented small-group work can help adolescents move forward.

Youth Counseling in Transition: Rethinking the Role of the Youth Counselor

Philemon Yuen-Wan CHOI

Abstract

Abstract

Youth counseling is a dynamic profession undergoing continual metamorphosis with the ever-changing psycho-socio-political context of Hong Kong. Several inter-disciplinary research conducted on juvenile gang, non-engaged youth, and adolescents at risk within the school system provided important evidence-based conceptual framework and models for the paradigm shift in the delivery of youth counseling services. The major breakthroughs include: holistic development for adolescents; early detection and early intervention; the delivery of primary, secondary, and tertiary preventive programs; and cross-disciplinary collaboration. The role of the youth counselor is no longer confined to the personal counseling services in the counseling room; the multiple roles include advocacy and intervention at the systemic and structural level, bringing about changes in the families, schools, and even government policies.

Searching for Manhood: Reflecting Growing up in a Chinese Way
Koon-Ming HO & Yuk-Shuen WONG

Abstract

Abstract

This article reported a qualitative research based on Giorgi’s (1975a, 1975b) phenomenological methodology that studied male identity formation of Chinese Canadian immigrants who grew up in China and later settled down in Canada. The purpose was to explore how their male identity developed, their current ideas about being men, and what they wanted to become in the future. The data yielded a theme that they learnt to be men by their own searching. Their experience of navigating across two cultures revealed some characteristics of growing up in a Chinese culture and the journey of searching for male identity in Canada.

The Relationship Among Acculturation, Acculturation Stress, and Depression for a Korean and a Korean–American Sample

Peter JI & Changming DUA

Abstract

Abstract

The relationships among acculturation, acculturation stress, and depression among a sample of 177 Koreans and Korean Americans were examined. Results showed that 49% of the participants obtained a score on a depression scale that would indicate a diagnosis of depression. A path analysis indicated that both acculturation and acculturation stress were predictors of the depression scale scores. Discussion focused on how the results could be interpreted within the context of the Korean culture. The possibility that Western measures of depression were culturally biased to the Koreans’ and Korean Americans’ disadvantage was also discussed.

Counseling/Psychotherapy With Chinese Singaporean Clients

Koong-Hean FOO, Paul L. MERRICK & Nikolaos KAZANTZIS

Abstract

Abstract

Singapore is a cosmopolitan state with a mix of Eastern and Westernized values, attitudes, and lifestyles. Like people of other developed countries, Singaporeans do face problems of depression, anxiety disorders, and schizophrenia among other mental illnesses. They, however, have a choice of Western or traditional therapies for managing these illnesses. This article reviews the literature on the efficacy of counseling or psychotherapy with Chinese Singaporeans, the predominant group. Implications for cognitive behavior therapy are discussed, and considerations for conducting therapy with Chinese Singaporean clients are outlined. This resource on the counseling and psychotherapy position in Singapore is offered as a further contribution to this emerging literature.
