Professional Certificate Programme in School Discipline and Classroom Management

The roles and the work of teachers are subject to change with changing times. Discipline is not just the duty of teachers on the discipline panel and management is not just a skill needed in the business world. In order to achieve the best learning and teaching outcome, teachers need to equip themselves to handle classes with complex social groups and individual dynamics.

In the belief that discipline starts with self-management of one's own emotional intellect, a component facilitating personal growth of teachers is included in the programme. Theories, which underpin application and practice in the classroom and other school situations will also be taught. Knowledge and skill in the management of behavioural problems will be introduced and real classroom and school discipline cases will be used for analysis and self-reflection, thereby further enhancing teachers' awareness and skills in the area.

The programme is designed to meet the following objectives:

  • To provide participants with an understanding of the philosophical tenets underlying school discipline.

  • To enhance participants' awareness of the importance of team-building and self-enrichment as a key to education management.

  • To explore the needs of students and develop strategies to enhance their participation in classroom learning.

  • To acquire negotiating techniques and effective ways of handling problem students.

Effective school discipline and classroom management are essential for fostering an optimal learning atmosphere where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Besides, in today’s rapidly evolving society, teachers play an important role in cultivating students’ self-discipline while fostering the development of their self-esteem. In recognition of this need, we have developed a comprehensive curriculum that addresses the core principles and practical techniques of promoting discipline and managing classrooms effectively.

Through a blend of theory and practice, our programme provides participants with research-based strategies and tools to establish a positive classroom culture, prevent behavioral issues, and effectively address challenging behaviors when they arise. Meanwhile, the participants will develop a deeper understanding of student behavior, learn proactive classroom management techniques, and acquire the skills necessary to create engaging and inclusive learning environments via interactive activities, case studies, discussions and practical exercises.

We look forward to welcoming you at Hong Kong Institute of Educational Research, CUHK and going through a rewarding journey towards becoming a skilled and effective classroom manager with you.
