Parent Education: Revision and Vision

This article revisits the purpose, nature, and meaning of parent education and foresees alternative practices for changing times. The article first reexamines the common conceptions of parent education and identifies the dominant themes underlying parent education. The revisit reveals a need to develop a contemporary vision and a new focus of parent education. This article suggests to reconceptualize “parent education” as “parent empowerment” and to transform parent education from a “private issue” to a “community responsibility.” It further suggests that parent education practice should shift from “knowledge inoculation” to “whole-person development.” The form of practice is to move from “professionalism” to “partnership.”

本文探討家長教育的目標、性質及意義,從而釐定未來的工作方法。文章首先審視家長教育的主要理念,找出家長教育背後的主旨。結果顯示,家長教育需要有一個更合時宜的視野和焦點。本文建議將「家長教育」的概念理解為「家長充權」,並將家長教育由「私人事件」轉化為「社區責任」。文章更建議家長教育的重點應由「知識的灌輸」轉變為「全人發展」,而推行形式則由「專業」走向「夥伴合作」。

Multicultural Considerations in Counseling Chinese Clients: Introducing the Narrative Alternative

While therapists and counselors counseling Chinese clients emphasize the need to become culturally sensitive and competent through developing culture-specific strategies, the movement to indigenize psychotherapy and counseling could also be understood within this framework of multicultural considerations. Narrative therapy as a postmodern form of practice is introduced as an alternative through considering the narrative metaphor, the narrative therapeutic process, and the narrative challenges to traditional approaches. The viability of the narrative alternative, demonstrated with illustration from three cases, is discussed.

愈來愈多心理治療及輔導人員察覺到,在輔導來自不同文化背景的人時,我們需要因應這些不同的文化背景而對輔導過程作出相應的調適,例如為個別文化發展一些針對性的治療技巧及策略。我們亦可從這多元文化的觀點,去理解心理治療及輔導本土化的訴求。「敘事治療」是後現代的一種心理治療方式。它獨有的「敘事比喻」以及「敘事治療過程」,對傳統的心理治療方式帶來了一定程度的衝擊。本文以三個個案,討論「敘事治療」在替華人進行心理治療及輔導的適用性。

This article aims to describe the development of counselor education in Turkey, especially in the following areas: (1) the brief history of counseling in Turkey; (2) the preparation and training of counselors; (3) the current status of counselor education; (4) the major issues now facing Turkish counselors; and (5) the future challenges of counselor education in Turkey and its trends of development.

適得其反:論消減與塑形

摘要

本文以三個個案為引子,引用行為學派理論中的塑形和消減兩種程序,討論為甚麼有時我們盡力去減少行為,但結果行為反而變本加厲。本文先指出這兩種目的分別在於增強和減弱行為的方法之間的微妙關係,再以討論和舉例的方式,加上在職老師的一些經驗分享,檢討這兩種程序在學校的應用,並印證理論與實踐的結合。

Abstract

This article begins with three cases in which two parents and a teacher tried to reduce some naughty behavior made by their children and student, respectively; but, to their dismay, the behavior worsened. The behavioral methods of shaping and extinction are used to explain why that could happen. Analysis of the methods reveals that the two methods, although designed to increase and decrease behavior, respectively, are also intertwined. Discussion, illustrative examples, and teachers’ experience sharing are used to show how shaping and extinction can be used effectively in schools.

Counseling Training in Hong Kong: Challenges and Possibilities

This article outlined major issues and challenges confronting the counseling profession in Hong Kong resulting from a rapid increase in counseling-related training programs in recent years. In order to maintain the healthy development of the counseling discipline, the professional community needs to put a stronger emphasis on assuming its “gate-keeping” function. There is a need to define more clearly what constitute “professional counseling,” and what credentials are needed for one to become a “professional counselor.” Some possible steps that counseling training programs and the professional community could take to strengthen counseling training and practice in Hong Kong are identified and discussed.

在本港,近年與輔導相關的培訓課程數目迅速增加。本文概述在這種情況下,本港輔導專業所面對的主要問題及挑戰。為了維持輔導界的健康發展,輔導專業社群必須加強其把關的功能,清楚界定何謂「專業輔導」,並釐定「專業輔導員」必要的資歷。本文亦會建議一些強化輔導培訓及實踐的方法,讓輔導培訓課程及輔導專業社群參考。
