Professional Certificate Programme in Management of Student Activities in Primary and Secondary Schools
Introduction
The Faculty of Education (“FoE”) and the Hong Kong Institute of Educational Research (“HKIER”) of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong Extra-curricular Activities Masters’ Association (“HKEAMA”) have always been in a leading role in the training of teachers organizing student activities. With the education reforms, there are new developments in student activities of which educational values are considered more important. To respond to the development of student activities and to accommodate the needs of professional training of educators, the FoE, the HKIER and the HKEAMA collaborate in offering the one-year Professional Certificate Programme in Management of Student Activities in Primary and Secondary Schools.
The programme offers professional development to participants not only by strengthening their foundation of theories in student activities, but also by providing them practicum opportunities to enhance their technical skills. Through the programme, participants would develop the necessary practical skills, planning and management techniques, and curriculum development strategies for organizing student activities as an effective means of facilitating a broad experiential learning and whole-person development of students in schools.

Foreword
School extra-curricular activities are life-wide experiential learning activities contrary to traditional classroom teaching. They are important elements of school curriculums. From the perspective of school education, through providing a variety of learning activities to students systematically, schools enrich students’ learning experiences, broaden their life experiences, nourish their positive attitudes and values, and facilitate their development in life. From the perspective of students’ learning, student activities enhance students’ self-efficacy, improve the relationship between teachers and students and in turn facilitate students’ learning effectiveness. In sum, schools achieve their mission of helping students’ holistic development through providing experiential learning opportunities in student activities. Therefore, management of student activities is a very important topic in the professional training of school management and teachers. Only with a critical mass of highly knowledgeable educators in student activities, can schools build up a positive culture to promote students’ whole person development.
The Faculty of Education and the Hong Kong Institute of Educational Research of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong Extra-curricular Activities Masters’ Association co-organize the Professional Certificate Programme in Management of Student Activities in Primary and Secondary Schools, which provide a systematic training in organizing student activities to primary and secondary school teachers. The instructors of the programme include University educators, front-line school principals and teachers, and professional experts related to student activities, etc. The programme is popular among primary and secondary school teachers. It places strong emphasis on both theory and practice. The programme adopts an all-round learning concept. Participants have plenty of opportunities to exchange ideas and experiences which facilitate organizing student activities in their own schools. In the past 30 years, this programme and its relevant predecessor programmes have helped develop many excellent educational talents who facilitate the development of student activities and whole person development in Hong Kong.
The programme is designed with the following objectives:
examine and consider fundamental learning theories and professional knowledge concerning student activities;
assist participants in developing the necessary practical skills, management techniques, and curriculum development strategies for organizing student activities;
provide opportunities for participants to take part in experiential learning activities;
help participants reflect on recent practice through case studies;
nurture a life-wide learning culture and a life-long learning attitude.
Upon completion of this programme, the participants are expected to:
master the fundamental learning theories and knowledge concerning student activities;
master the necessary practical skills, management techniques, and curriculum development strategies for organizing student activities;
gain field experience in the experiential learning activities of the programme;
become a reflexive practitioner of student activities;
engage in life-wide and life-long learning.

The teaching personnel above include full-time and part-time lecturers/instructors of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, front-line personnel of extra-curricular activities of primary/secondary schools and relevant professionals.
Serving teachers in primary or secondary schools who are responsible for or involved in organizing and managing student activities, and holders of teacher qualification and a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university.
This programme adopts a variety of teaching activities to facilitate learning and teaching, and to bring about the desired learning outcomes. The learning activities include lectures, camps, visits, interactive sharing sessions, case studies, practicum sessions and experiential learning, etc.
HK$39,300 (including fees for practicum activities in the module DSA0003)
Fees paid are NOT refundable or transferable. The University reserves the right to cancel the offering of this programme. If the programme will not be offered as scheduled, the fees paid by the applicants will be refunded in full.
To qualify for the award of the Professional Certificate in Management of Student Activities in Primary and Secondary Schools, participants are required to:
complete a total of FOUR compulsory modules and ONE elective module;
attend no less than 70% in each of the required modules set in the curriculum; and
complete all written assignments with an average grade of C or above.
The study period of this programme is from November 2024 to June 2025. Except for practicum sessions, each module will take place on one evening from Monday to Friday (mainly on Tuesday and Thursday). Certain sessions may be arranged on Saturdays or school holidays.
